SUPERB 1936 OLYMPIC GAMES PHOTO BOOK PUBLISHED BY REICHSSPORTVERLAG OF BERLIN
(THIS IS NOT ONE OF THE STANDARD
OLYMPIC CIGARETTE CARD BOOKS
- IT IS A MUCH RARER BOOK)
This is a beautiful example of the rare Willi F. Könitzer heavily photographic 1936 Summer Olympics book OLYMPIA 1936 as published by the Reichssportverlag in Berlin in 1936. Könitzer was a well-known German author before the Olympics and he did a wonderful job of capturing the international spirit of the Summer Games in Berlin with photos almost never found in other similar source material.
The 9-1/2 x 12-1/2 inch, 176 page linen bound, hard cover photo book begins with a solitary Nazi eagle with a swastika on his breast holding the five Olympic Rings of the Games on the first page. Following the title page there is a transcript of the exchange of telegrams between Nazi Führer Adolf Hitler and Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the International Olympic Committee, and considered responsible for the modern Olympic Games.
A large group of photos show the preparations for the XI. Olympiade as well as the assembly of the athletes. The Olympic torch is shown being lit by the sun in Olympia, Greece and being delivered to the stadium in Berlin. Leni Riefenstahl is shown filming the Games and Hitler is shown opening them.
There are scenes at the Olympic Village and of the athletes talking to Hitler, eating and generally enjoying themselves as they prepare for the Olympic Games.
While much of the emphasis is naturally on German athletes, the acceptance of black American athletes like David Albritton, Cornelius Johnson and Jesse Owens is mentioned prominently, contrary to what you see and hear on sensational TV channels like the History Channel.
A good deal of the body of the book depicts the Olympic from the "starting shot to the gold medal". Photos show athletes in action as well as receiving their medals. A very rare photo shows many identifiable Nazi officials watching the pentathlon including Reinhard Heydrich in the uniform of a SS General.

Rare photos show the command bridge for the 28 microphones, TV cameras inside the stadium, and an entire room of audio equipment for the 1000 watt loudspeaker system. Others show the pistol actuated stopwatch and time recording system and frames from film taken by a multi-lane finish line camera.
Adolf Hitler is seen enjoying the events at the swimming stadium, and a good deal of coverage is given to tumblers, sailboat races, and other less-common events. The closing ceremonies are shown in two unusual photographs and the last few pages list the gold, silver and bronze medal winners in various events.
An excellent Nazi photo book book in fine condition with a handwritten dedication on first flyleaf that says in German "Christmas 1943 Family Kerschbaum".

This superb large Nazi photo book OLYMPIA 1936 is **SOLD**.
