A NICE CASED EXAMPLE
OF THE NAZI 1936
OLYMPIA-ERINNERUNGSMEDAILLE
OR OLYMPIC
MEMORIAL MEDAL
As nearly every collector knows there was a 1st and 2nd Class Olympic medal awarded for outstanding leadership in the organization of the Olympic Games in Berlin and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany in 1936.
Because there was such a large number of people involved in the planning and carrying-out of the 1936 Olympische Spiele who did not meet the criteria for the 1st and 2nd Class Olympic medals, but were deserving of some sort of recognition, the Ministry of the Interior asked Adolf Hitler to authorize an Olympia-Erinnerungsmedaille or Olympic Memorial Medal (also called the Olympic Commemorative Medal).
This is an original one of those Olympic Memorial Medals complete with its original white, leather covered box as awarded to a German policeman who was selected from the Berlin City Police to work at the 1936 Olympic Summer Games.
We bought the medal in the box from the husband of the policeman's daughter. The husband was in the United States Air Force in Germany in the 1950s and married the daughter of the policeman to whom this Olympia-Erinnerungsmedaille was awarded. She inherited the medal from her father but unfortunately does not wish to be connected to it in any way so we agreed to her request not to divulge her name or her father's name.
