This is a rare Third Reich guidebook to the Olympic Village built by the Wehrmacht for the athletes who participated in XI Olympic Games held in Berlin in August 1936.

Dorf des Friedens (Village of Peace) has 64 heavily illustrated pages with text by Hans Saalbach and the cover design and illustrations in the book are by Ruth Hasse. Photos in this Führer durch das Olympische Dorf were supplied by Dr. Wolf Strache of Berlin.

Athlete’s home have different wall paintings of famous buildings or historical sights in Germany.
Inside the back cover is an 8-1/4 x 11 inch two-sided fold-out map showing the Olympic Village in color on one side (above), and the area of the city of Berlin in black & white on the reverse side (below). The city map has a picture of the Reichssportfeld, the Deutschlandhalle, and several buildings used for the organization of the 1936 Summer Olympics. Tempelhof Airport is marked with little flying airplanes.
The main building is called Hindenburghaus (shown above and right), and this 6 x 8-3/8 inch softcover book also contains information about the eating facilities, different training facilities for the athletes, the medical building, administration buildings, etc. Illustrations show the design of a Wohnhaus or athlete’s home, the Hindenburghaus with theater, cinema and training facilities, the swimming pool and sauna, etc.
The Olympic Village mirrors the German Homeland, according to Dorf des Friedens. The houses for the athletes are named after German cities and are simple, airy and practical, and they are surrounded by trees and grass, tranquil park-like surroundings complete with a lake.
The rare black & white picture at the top of this USMBOOKS webpage shows Reichssportführer Hans von Tschammer und Osten (with his dog) during an inspection trip to das olympische Dorf while it was under construction. He is accompanied by the Commandant of the Olympic Village Hauptmann Wolfgang Fürstner, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Reichskriegsminister Generalfeldmarschall von Blomberg, architect Werner March (who also designed the Olympic Stadium) and others.

Additional pictures show the Hindenburghaus (the “center of the Olympic Village”), and rare pictures of both the inside and outside of homes for the athletes, the lake and sauna, the Glockenspiel, as well as the house of the Commandant of the Olympic Village, Hauptmann Wolfgang Fürstner (who committed suicide on 19 August 1936, three days after the end of the Olympics).
Dorf des Friedens was printed and published by Philipp Reclam of Leipzig in 1936 and few have survived as this example has, in very nice used condition. It is complete with its original dust jacket and the frequently missing fold-out map in the back. It has a tight spine and no odor.
