RARE 1937 GERMAN HARDCOVER PHOTO BOOK ABOUT NAZI GERMANY
BY AMERICAN STANLEY MCCLATCHIE

Nazi fans, Hitler admirers, swastika flags

McClatchie, a member of a wealthy and well-known southern California family, lived for some years in Germany prior to the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (Nazi) ascent to power after victory in the Reichstag elections of January 1933. Returning to Germany, he was greatly impressed by the consolidation of political power that Hitler had engineered, but he was also impressed by the industrial, technical and social revolution that had taken place under the Nazis which had altered every aspect of the land and people he thought he knew.

The effects of various boycotts and embargoes on the National Socialist German economy convinced Hitler to redouble scientific research efforts in the hope of making Germany substantially less dependent on foreign imports and foreign export markets. That research yielded astonishing results in areas like synthetic gasoline and rubber from coal, television, pharmaceuticals, electronics, chemicals, etc. McClatchie was amazed by these advances and wrote Sieh: das Herz Europas in an effort to bring them to the attention of the world. In the book he was boastful about all that was good in Germany and he openly supported the anti-Jewish and anti-homosexual laws the Nazis enacted.

Sieh: das Herz Europas (See the Heart of Europe)

This is an extremely rare 9-1/4 x 11-7/8 inch, 254-page original example of the very heavily illustrated German language hardcover Nazi book Sieh: das Herz Europas (See the Heart of Europe) by Stanley McClatchie as published by Verlag Heinrich Hoffmann in Berlin in 1937.

The book contains well over 300 full-page and half-page photographs and several two-page spreads. An English language version of this book was also published in Germany under the title “Look to Germany - The Heart of Europe”.

Hitler over Europe

By any measure the first four years of National Socialist government in Germany had been an overwhelming success. It was difficult for Nazis (and even ordinary Germans) to avoid boasting about their recovery from military defeat in World War I. The recovery from economic depression in Allied countries like Britain and France - even in America - lagged far behind the German rate of recovery. In spite of the success of the National Socialists who were so popular at home, others could find little good to write or say about them or Germany. This book was McClatchie’s attempt to present the world with a different, more complimentary view of Nazi Germany, and complimentary it is!

McClatchie was surprised how different Nazi Germany actually was compared to how he felt it was portrayed in the American and British press. Sieh: das Herz Europas contains several pages and illustrations from the foreign press as examples of what he considered hate propaganda.

'lesbian women and feminine men in Nazi Germany - VERBOTEN
Aryan vs Jewish constrasts, Graf Helldorf
Sieh: das Herz Europas is absolutely indispensable to any objective understanding of the Third Reich era in Germany. Original examples of this book are scarce.

This 85+ year old Nazi example is in very nice used condition with only minor soiling to the front and back covers only (front cover shown at the top of this USMBOOKS web page, back cover shown left). Tight spine, no odor.
Stanley McClatchie knew and wrote that, Sieh: das Herz Europas would be considered Nazi propaganda by many, and it certainly was. After the war all editions of the book were considered to be very dangerous by the victorious Allies so de-Nazification commissions sought them out for destruction. Very few of the copies that were printed survived.
Above, Berlin Police President Graf Helldorf and Ritter von Epp are used in pictures illustrating the 'typical
contrasts' between Aryan Germans and Jews. Below, 'lesbian women and feminine men' pictured
