This is a wonderful, almost indestructible Third Reich era aluminum identity document / ticket holder used on the Berlin Surface Railroad in December 1934. The rugged 3-1/8 x 3-1/2 inch (80 x 90 mm) metal box-like ticket holder is about 3/16 inch (4 mm) thick and has a slot in the bottom edge for inserting an Arbeiterwochenkarte (Worker’s Weekly Ticket) for transportation on Berlin’s S-Bahn or Surface Railway.

The ticket enclosed in the holder is for passage between Kaulsdorf and Halensee, and next to it is a photo of the bearer wearing a visor cap, perfectly sealed beneath transparent plastic. This ticket was apparently good for the entire month of December of 1934 based on the “12.34” stamped at the top of it.

Tickets used in this patented ELLER case had to be destroyed to get them out, but then a lever could be moved that allowed the insertion of a new ticket. The back of the case is marked with the ELLER logo and the AEG logo of Allgemeine Elektrische Gesellschaft of Berlin, the employer of the man in the photograph.
A unique Nazi document in fine condition. It is from the collection of Ray & Josephine Cowdery, authors of the full-color Third Reich identity document guidebook, “Papers Please!”.
