Felix Graf von Luckner
Felix Graf Luckner

Below we provide a brief biography of Felix Graf Luckner and it is easy to find a great deal more informatin about him on the internet or in books about him. Suffice it to say, he was one of the greatest sea captains and raiders of all time scutteling and destroying an enormous amount of Allied war material.

The absolutely original 9-1/2 x 12-3/4 inch Third Reich sepia toned print we offer here shows a smiling Luckner in a Navy cap with a pipe in his mouth and a Nazi winged swastika pin on his lapel. The photo is dedicated to “liebe Anneliese” and signed at the bottom Felix, Graf Luckner 35. It is difficult to find a nice Third Reich portrait of Luckner, let alone a dedicated portrait with the legend’s full signature!
Felix Luckner autograph

Felix Graf von Luckner, born in Dresden on 9 June 1881, was a German nobleman, German naval officer, author and noted sailor who earned the nickname Der Seeteufel (the Sea Devil) - while his crew was called the Kaisers Piraten (the Emperor's Pirates) - for their exploits aboard the commerce raider SMS Seeadler (Sea Eagle) during World War I.

Before entering the Imperial German Navy Luckner had already been around the world in an array of ships as a sailor. During World War I he saw action at the Battle of Helgoland Bight, and during the Battle of Jutland he commanded a gun turret aboard the battleship Kronprinz Wilhelm.

His experiences as the Commander of the auxiliary cruiser Seeadler (Sea Eagle) between 1916 and 1918 made him a legendary figure (be sure to read the wikipedia synopsis of the Allied shipping he sank or captured!).

After the war he wrote a book of his adventures which became a best-seller in Germany, and Lowell Thomas' book about him spread Luckner's fame widely. Felix von Luckner was a Mason, an accomplished magician, friend of SS-General Reinhard Heydrich, and an entertaining speaker in both German and English. He lived in Halle on the Saale river (Reinhard Heydrich’s home town) and helped to negotiate the surrender of the town with the American Forces in 1945. After the Second World War Luckner moved to Sweden where he lived in Malmö until his death in Malmö in April 1966, at the age of 84. He is buried in Main Cemetery Ohlsdorf, Hamburg.
