This is a fine example of the seldom seen 5-1/8 x 7-1/2 inch, 400 page, very heavily illustrated soft cover ,,Handbuch der SA’’ (Hand Book of the SA) with over 250 photographs and illustrations as published in cooperation with the High Leadership of the SA in Berlin by Verlag ,,Offene Worte’’ in 1939.

The hand book begins with full-page photographs of both Adolf Hitler and Viktor Lutze and then gets down to the business of the SA. That business includes subjects such as the SA and its many local units, SA Leadership, the Naval SA, the Horsemen of the SA, SA Engineers, SA Signals Units, SA Medics, etc.

There are chapters on insignia of ranks, flags and standards, leadership, the mission of the SA, service in the Sturm, education, fire arms training and shooting, political service, marching, bivouac, etc., etc.

,,Handbuch der SA’’ is extremely well illustrated with photographs when they do the best job and with drawings when they make the point better. A lot of “expert” books and articles have been written in English by people who have never seen or referred to this SA hand book at all. It is an essential piece of the puzzle when studying the Third Reich, the Nazi Party and the SA.
