SS Repatriation Book
,,DAS GROSSE AUFGEBOT’’
(
THE GREAT CALL TO ARMS)

A PHOTO HISTORY
OF THE SS REPATRIATION
OF THE
VOLKSDEUTSCHEN
FROM BESSARABIA
AND DOBRUDSCHA
Long before the government of Adolf Hitler launched its invasion of the Soviet Union in mid-1941, it had concluded a diplomatic agreement with Josef Stalin’s representatives to repatriate the thousands of Volksgenossen or ethnic Germans then living in Bessarabia and Dobrudscha (the Krim or Crimea).
Nazi Volksgenossen

SS + Nazi Volksgenossen An enormous effort was made under the auspices of Heinrich Himmler’s SS to reach those people, and then to provide for their every need during the long trip back to Germany in the summer of 1940. Their needs included food, clothing, housing, medical care, etc. and it was provided by an army of Germans specifically recruited to accompany the returnees or “Rückwanderer”.
The Germans in Bessarabia and Dobrudscha were originally settled there by Prince Eugen in 1770. Hitler made it one of his top priorities to free them and return them to Großdeutschland. ,,Das grosse Aufgebot’’ or “The Call to Arms” tells the story of their return and repatriation in text and dozens of large, clear photographs.

The 7-1/2 x 10-1/4 inch, very heavily illustrated, hardcover book contains 112 pages, and most pages contain one or two large photos per page.

Nazi Ethnic German Many of those photos show uniformed members of the SS, units sent to Yugoslavia to process the returnees. Only the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) of the SS was allowed to process Rückwanderer repatriations. This rare book was published in Novisad-Neusatz (in Russia) in March 1941 and it is in very good condition.
