Himmlers Kanonenfutter translates as “Himmler’s Cannon Fodder” and this 140 x 220 mm (5-3/8 x 8-1/2 inch) two-sided piece of Allied propaganda ephemera was produced to urge Wehrmacht soldiers to stop and think about what they were fighting for.

These kind of propaganda leaflets were dropped from Allied airplanes flying over Nazi Germany and German occupied territory in 1944 and 1945, just as the Germans had dropped propaganda leaflets over England, Holland, Belgium, France and Italy earlier during World War II.

Who is prolonging the already lost war? Who is prolonging massive suffering among the German civilian population? Who is forcing you to continue to fight against a better equipped enemy? Who is sacrificing the lives of thousands of German soldiers, soldiers who should be supporting the rebuilding of Germany after the war?

The answer to all these queries is Himmler and his associates. At the bottom is says: German Soldier! What will be your destiny: Himmler’s cannon fodder or Germany’s support? The reverse side has an illustration of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler shoveling soldier corpses in a cannon.

This authentic anti-Nazi Allied airborne propaganda leaflet is true ephemera - it was never meant to be saved and thus originals are hard to find. This genuine example was in a book brought back to the US by a GI after the end of the war. The condition is very nice, not faded or torn, exactly as shown.
