WAFFEN-SS AUSCHWITZ INMATE CONDEMNATION

Auschwitz Concentration Camp
WAFFEN-SS REPORT ON A COMMUNIST INMATE OF KONZENTRATIONSLAGER AUSCHWITZ (KLA)
Waffen-SS letter
This original A4 size letter (8-1/4 x 11-5/8 inch) dated Auschwitz, 17 November 1942 originated at the Waffen-SS Kommandantur des Konzentrationslager Auschwitz (Waffen-SS Command at Concentration Camp Auschwitz), written by the 2. Schutzhaftlagerführer (Head of the 2nd Protective Custody Camp), SS-Obersturmführer Göde.

According to this letter inmate number 10.005 Isidor Grünszpan, who was born at Kattowitz on 12 April 1905, was a “communist in his heart and soul”. Since early youth, Grünszpan was a member of communist organizations and while an inmate at Auschwitz he connected with other communist prisoners. With old comrades and other communist functionaries he formed a “Communist Clique”. His behavior toward other inmates was asocial and he only formed relationships if doing so resulted in advantages for him.

Communist Concentration Camp Auschwitz inmate
The letter points out that his behavior showed that during his imprisonment at Auschwitz he had not changed in any positive way. He also still “sails in communist waters”.

Like most concentration camp inmates, Isidor Grünszpan had been sentenced to a specific time in Auschwitz and this letter was written to try to ensure that he would not be released when his sentence had been served, even if someone, somewhere offered positive words in his behalf.

SS-Obersturmführer Göde This is a rare critique of the behavior of not only a concentration camp prisoner, but an important insight into the convictions of the SS Officer in charge of incarcerating him.
