Few people are aware how much rarer this medal is than the similar medal issued at the time of the return of the Sudetenland to Germany in the fall of 1938. This medal, Die Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 13. März 1938 or the Commemorative Medal of 13 March 1938 is a miniature version of the medal designed by Professor Richard Klein of München (Munich) for Reichsparteitag in 1938.

This Nazi medal, often referred to as the Österreichmedaille in German, was issued in special recognition to members of the Nazi Party in Austria who lost their homes, were jailed, or forced to leave the country. It was issued in some cases to the widows or parents of those who died in the reunification effort. It was also issued to members of the Wehrmacht, the police, SS, NSKK and NSFK who were involved in the reunification of Austria nd Germany. Total awards of this medal were just over 300,000 as compared with over 1,160,000 for the Sudetenland medal (Sudetenlandmedaille).

Some famous recipients of this medal were Reichsführer-SS Himmler, Dr. Robert Ley, Generalleutnant der Polizei und SS-Gruppenführer Ernst Kaltenbrunner, SS-Obergruppenführer Sepp Dietrich, Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm Keitel, Kurt "Panzer" Meyer, General Heinz Guderian, Munich's Lord Mayor Karl Fiehler, Generalinspekteur der Luftwaffe Erhard Milch and many more.
