This is a wonderful authentic souvenir of Adolf Hitler’s home on the Obersalzberg high above Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps.
The Grosse Halle had two prominent features: an enormous retractable glass window and an equally large scale fireplace made of beautiful reddish-gray marble. Dignitaries from around the world passed their time with Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun. They included Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, Albert Speer, Il Duce Benito Mussolini and Count Ciano, Baldur von Schirach, Sepp Dietrich, Hermann Goering, Joseph Goebbels, Heinrich Hoffmann, Reinhard Heydrich, Karl Wolff, Hermann Esser, Martin Bormann, David Lloyd George, British PM Neville Chamberlain, the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson, Gretl Braun and her future husband Hermann Fegelein, Wilhelm Keitel, Erich Rader, Karl Dönitz, Walter Model, Albert Kesselring and many others, while they were being served drinks and hors d’oeuvres by SS men in white jackets.
The item we offer here contains an actual piece of the red marble from the fireplace in Hitler’s Berghof living room on the Obersalzberg. This large 1-1/4 x 5-5/8 x 6-3/8 inch, golden 2-1/2 pound solid aluminum ashtray was manufactured by an American industrial concern, The Weatherhead Company, whose President was on technical war assignment in Europe on behalf of the United States government one month after VE-Day. Albert J. Weatherhead removed a piece of Hitler’s living room fireplace from the Berghof and had it cut into pieces approximately 5/16 x 3/4 inch long, and those pieces were inserted into replicas of Hitler’s fireplace like this one.
As most historians and collectors know, Hitler loved the area of Berchtesgaden and more specifically the Obersalzberg, a few miles above it. The moment he was able, Hitler purchased an existing home on the Obersalzberg, Haus Wachenfeld, and began reconstructing it to reflect his tastes and style. When finished, the Berghof was a palace fit for a king within an enormous Grosse Halle (living room) overlooking the valley in which Berchtesgaden lies.
At the top of the fireplace replica the lettering says FLICK YOUR ASHES ON HITLER’S HEARTH and at the bottom the lettering says THIS IS AN EXACT COPY OF THE FIREPLACE IN HITLER’S FORMER HOME AT BERCHTESGADEN FROM WHICH THE MARBLE PIECE INSET ABOVE IS AN ACTUAL PART TAKEN FROM THERE ONE MONTH AFTER V-E DAY.
On the back between four original felt pads is a document printed in white attesting to the origin of the marble piece above the signatures of Albert J. Weatherhead Jr., George Hufferel and Frederick M. Bock.
Over the years the stones have been removed from many of these Weatherhead / Hitler fireplace ashtrays. The stone in this one is certified authentic by Ray & Josephine Cowdery, authors of the book THE NEW GERMAN REICHSCHANCELLERY IN BERLIN 1938-1945 and experts on the materials used in the construction of the Berghof. The item is in very good used condition.
