ORIGINAL BERLIN
|
||||||||||||||||||
| This is a fine, very historic piece. It is a 4-1/2 x 6-3/8 inch off-white security lined envelope sent from the Office of the Party Adjutant of the Führer at 78 Wilhelmstraße in Berlin at 5 pm on Christmas Eve of 1938. The Adjutants Office was directly across the street from Adolf Hitlers residence at the Reichschancellery. The envelope is addressed to retired Gauleiter (a.D. = außer Dienst) Josef Leopold at the Nazi Partys Braunes Haus in München (Munich). The stamp in the lower left corner shows it to be official mail that traveled free throughout the Reich, so no postage stamp was necessary. Especially interesting is the message stamped to the left of the round Berlin cancelation - it means Dont forget to put the house number [street address] on the envelope. Please note that the street address of the Braunes Haus on Brienner Straße in München has been left off the envelope! |
