JEWISH LUFTWAFFE PILOT FAMILY DOSSIER

Kanzlei des Führers der NSDAP
THE NAZI DOSSIER REGARDING
REQUESTS FROM THE FAMILY
OF A LUFTWAFFE PILOT WHO
DIED SERVING WITH THE
CONDOR LEGION IN SPAIN
Official Nazi government police dossier
This 60+ page official Nazi police dossier involves everyone from Chancellor Adolf Hitler to Generalfeldmarschall Hermann Göring and the highest level government and police authorities in Berlin and Wien (Vienna), Germany’s two largest cities.
Spanish Cross in Bronze
The intricate web of correspondence took place over a period of five years (1938 - 1942) as a result of the desire of a father, Camillo Sobotka, to visit the grave of his son. The son, Oberleutnant Hans Georg Sobotka, died a hero’s death as a pilot in the Condor Legion in Spain and was buried with honors among his comrades in the Invaliden Cemetery in Berlin. The Reichsminister of Aviation, Generalfeldmarschall Hermann Göring sent the family a signed photograph and the thanks of the Führer and Fatherland. He awarded the Spanish Cross in Bronze, and invited the family to Berlin for a memorial service.
Handwritten request Edith Sobotka
The Sobotka family decided to accept the Göring invitation only to find that they were unable to travel. The father of decorated Condor Legion pilot was Camillo Sobotka, a World War I officer in the army and a Jew (volljüdisch), and the mother Edith was 100% aryan. The father when told that his passport would have to be stamped with a J (for Jude or Jew) and that he would have to add the middle name “Israel”, objected and decided to take his case up with the government.
Reichskommissar letter 1938
He involved Gauleiter Josef Bürckel, SA Brigadeführer and Vice Mayor of Wien Kozich, Adolf Hitler, Hermann Göring, etc., etc. At one point Camillo Sobotka even claimed he was an illegitimate child and not 100% Jewish in order to be granted an exemption from the J and “Israel” requirements. His only surviving child, a daughter Ruth also requested exemption from the requirement for a J in her identity documents and the use of the middle name “Sarah”.
Sobotka Letter to Hitler
The entire dossier is one of unimaginable complexity! The Kanzlei of the Führer initially responded by sending copies of the “Family and First Name Law” of 5 January 1938 which essentially denied the possibility of exempting members of the Sobotka family as they had requested. The Reichsstatthalter wrote the Gestapo, the Reichsleiter wrote the Reichsführer-SS, the Reichsführer-SS wrote the Nazi Party Kanzlei and the Party Kanzlei wrote the Gauleiter. A great deal of correspondence went back and forth between Wien and Berlin before the matter was resolved.

In the end, by the Fall of 1942 the government of Germany caved in to the Sobotka family. In consideration of the Heldentod (Hero’s Death) of the son Hans Georg Sobotka and Hermann Göring’s response to it, and the aryan ancestry of Mrs. Edith Sobotka, the German government relented and granted the exemptions they had requested.
Condor Legion
The 72 year old Camillo Sobotka was given permission to travel to Berlin without a J or the name Israel on his identity papers. His daughter Ruth was given a dispensation by the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW) in Berlin to marry a German soldier, Gefreiter Wäldin and the Führer himself decided that she qualified as deutschblütig (of German blood).
Hitler's Office Berlin letter
Condor Legion Spain
The Camillo Sobotka / Hans Georg Sobotka matter was an extremely complicated one. The outcome is amazing! While it is very difficult to locate a complete Nazi government dossier of this complexity, we would say it is impossible to find another that could not be resolved without involving the 23rd Chancellor of Germany himself, Adolf Hitler. It belongs in a museum, or in the collection of material related to the activities of the Condor Legion in Spain. It would make a riveting documentary on the History Channel!

The extremely rare Third Reich German dossier is in very good original condition and is from the collection of authors Ray & Josephine Cowdery. It comes with a signed and dated Certificate of Authenticity.
