The name Cowdery or Cowdrey is undoubtedly of French origin, and is probably derived from the French Coudraie which signifies a grove of hazel trees. William Cowdrey of Weymouth, England came to America in 1630 and spelled his name Cowdrey and Cowdery. The town clerk in Lynn, Massachusetts spelled the name according to its pronunciation, Cowdry. William's son Nathaniel outdid his father, spelling his last name three different ways. This book about the Cowdery family was originally published in 1911 after years of research in Europe and America. It traces the family back to France prior to the Norman invasion of England, shows and comments on Cowdray Castle in Sussex, and picks up the family lineage in 1256.

The original 1911 genealogy of the families Cowdery - Cowdrey - Cowdray , etc. was reprinted in a hardcover replica edition in 1978 and nearly all copies were sold at that time. USM has acquired the few remaining copies. Like the 1911 edition by Mary Bryant Alverson Mehling, this one contains 18 illustrations and is the definitive record of the ancestors of, and those who descended from the William Cowdrey who emigrated from England to the United States in 1630 and settled at Lynn, Massachusetts. Most Cowdery descendants alive today can easily pick up their lineage as of 1911 and complete their genealogy with ease.
