This is a very nice original example of the well-illustrated Nazi handbook for German youth called Deutschland ruft euch! (Germany Calls You!). This rare 6 x 8-7/8 inch, 84-page softcover publication was given to boys and girls leaving high school in Vienna in 1940, which after the reunification of Austria with Nazi Germany in 1938 had become the second largest city in all of Grossdeutschland (Greater Germany). It was published for the Reichsstatthalter in Wien and the City School Administration of Vienna.

Beautifully printed by Deutscher Verlag für Jugend und Volk, this was a valuable and impressive first introduction for students finishing high school and starting a new portion of their life as part of “the mighty army of productive members of Greater German society.”

The remainder of the book has text and many photos that explain the Nazi attitude towards Jews, the Armed Forces, the Hitler Youth, the DAF, the KdF, the Nazi Party and the people who ran it (referred to as Hitler’s Mitarbeiter or colleagues. A most interesting chapter presents the Nazi view on the concept of freedom entitled “Only Through The Law Can One Really Be Free.”

Following a full-page Hoffmann photo portrait of Nazi Führer and German Chancellor Adolf Hitler, there is a full-page Hoffmann portrait of the Nazi Gauleiter of Vienna, Joseph Bürckel (shown left), followed immediately by Bürckel’s introduction to Wiener Buben und Mädel. He urges Viennese boys and girls to follow the Führer’s great example of hard work and dedication to the National Socialist cause by joining the HJ and BdM to further their education. Courageous, spirited, hardworking men and women are needed to work for Germany’s destiny! “Germany calls you!”

The last two pages of the book have the complete 25-point Nazi Party Program as written by Adolf Hitler in February 1920.

Deutschland ruft euch! contains Presse-Hoffmann photos printed on 16 glossy paper pages interspersed in the book. They show Hitler addressing Parliament in Berlin and the huge crowd on the Heldenplatz in Vienna in April 1938 as well as the Führer with uniformed HJ boys and adoring BdM girls. Other photos show Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Aviation Hermann Goering, Reichsjugendführer Baldur von Schirach, Reichsleiter Alfred Rosenberg with Rudolf Hess, Luftwaffe airplanes over the Reichsparteitag grounds in Nuremberg, Nazi tanks, and Hitler with a U-Boot crew.

A brief history of Austria since World War I follows, and a recap of how it was reunited with Germany in the new Grossdeutschland.

Space between the portraits of Hitler and Bürckel in the front of the book is provided for a photograph of the student who owned this book . The student information and photo page are unused in this rare 81 year old example of Deutschland ruft euch! A previous owner used a pencil to underline an anti-Jewish sentence and the word Juden in a few places in the book. Otherwise it is in very nice used condition, no odor.
