If you collect militaria or read history of the Nazi period and are not familiar with the Große Duden Bildwörterbuch (Big Duden Illustrated Dictionary) of the Third Reich era, this item will be of interest to you! The Duden concept was pioneered by the Bibliografisches Institut AG of Leipzig and took the form of heavily illustrated right hand pages with comprehensive definitions on the opposite left hand page.

The Duden we offer here is a good example of the 5 x 7-1/4 inches, 796 page, 1937 edition containing thousands and thousands of individual illustrations like the ones shown here in our scans.

The dictionary is divided into sections such as People & Home, Work & Professions, Free Time, Knowledge Research & Art, Belief, The State, Traffic, Lands & Peoples, Plants & Animals, etc.

Each of the sections is subdivided into many sub-sections so that there is even a page on barbershops, for example. The sort of information available only in an illustrated Duden makes it possible to find out the correct Third Reich German name for virtually any item.

The illustrations on page 255 show all the items of equipment used in mountain climbing and make it possible to find out that those little metal pieces around the edges of the sole of Gebirgsjäger mountain climbing boots are called Flügelnagel. How else would you know?

There are many sections related to the military including Weapons, Shooting, Maneuvers, Military Movements, Military Situations, Fortifications, Aviation, Sanitation, the Navy, etc. These contain details as small as things like Erkennungsmarken (dogtags), shooting glasses, etc.

If you are interested in these subjects, there is no substitute for owning the Duden Illustrated Dictionary. The only problem is that the Third Reich editions are nearly impossible to find these days. Here is your chance to own one printed on fine paper in very nice condition, but with a clear plastic protective sheet stuck to the cover!

We are also offering Der Große Duden Stilwörterbuch, the phrasing and style dictionary of the German language during the Nazi era published by the Bibliografisches Institut AG of Leipzig in 1934. It is subtitled "A Collection of Correct and Useful Expressions and Idioms" and explains the proper use of the language at the time.

This excellent example measures 5 x 7-1/4 inches and has 696 pages.
