The rest of the pages in this great Nazi photo book consists of pictures with captions of the 1939 Nazi air campaign in Poland: Luftwaffe airplanes in action over Poland, Luftwaffe pilots in fighter planes in the air and on the ground, Luftwaffe ground crews, battle damage seen from the air, reconnaissance air crews at work, Luftwaffe weathermen and weapons specialists, Adolf Hitler visiting a Luftwaffe air field in Poland and shaking hands with wounded pilots, huge artillery pieces, damaged Luftwaffe fighter planes, transport planes, and photos taken by war photographers on the ground showing destroyed Polish military airplanes and air fields, bridges, trains, cities, etc., etc. Many of the photos include clear close-up views of pilots and other Luftwaffe personnel in action that show combat clothing and other equipment rarely seen in photos taken later in the war.

Flieger im Kampf was published by Verlag Erich Klinghammer of Berlin and has a copyright date of 1939. It has an index of all the picture credits in the back.

This 80 year old hardcover Nazi aviation photo book is in used condition, and previous dampness has discolored part of the pages.  The book is dried out now and does not have any odor.  The cloth spine shows wear. It was once part of the library of the Volksschule in Reichelsheim (between Frankfurt and Heidelberg)  and their eagle and swastika stamp is on the front fly leaf  and inside the back cover.  Our price reflects condition.

Flieger im Kampf (Aviators in Battle) is subtitled "Photo Documents by War Correspondents of the German Air Force" and according to text below the title on the title page, this Third Reich book was published in agreement with the Reichsluftfahrtministerium, Hermann Goering's Air Ministry in Berlin.

The handsome, rare 6-7/8 x 9-½ inch, 80-page hardcover book has only three pages of text. The first page of the book is Adolf Hitler's announcement to the Wehrmacht dated 1 September 1939, announcing the start of Nazi military action in Poland. The opposite page shows Hitler in the Reichstag (Parliament) after the declaration of war. The next page of text is a message by Generalfeldmarschall and Nazi Aviation Minister Hermann Goering to members of his Luftwaffe, saying their time had come to prove that Hitler's faith in the Luftwaffe was justified. That text is accompanied by a photo of Goering and Chief of the General Staff of the Luftwaffe, Generalmajor Hans Jeschonek, studying maps during the invasion of Poland.

There are also photos of Reichsluftfahrtminister Hermann Göring awarding the Iron Cross to Luftwaffe pilots in the field, Göring with Generaloberst Erhard Milch, Generalmajor Hans Jeschonek and other high-ranking Luftwaffe Officers in Poland.

The last page of text is toward the end of Flieger im Kampf and is a Tagesbefehl (Order of the Day) by Göring dated 27 September 1939, congratulating the Luftwaffe on a job well done during the Poland campaign.
