| This original 8-1/4 x 11-5/8 inch (A4) two-sided letter dated 10 March 1941 is on the letterhead of the Geheime Staatspolizei (Gestapo) Staatspolizeileitstelle Wien at Morzinplatz 4 and is addressed to the Reichsstatthalter (the highest civil authority in the region), who apparently asked the Gestapo to review the case of one Josef Batke for crimes committed years earlier. Back in 1910, Batke had been charged with attempted robbery, and sexual assault (in which case there had been a threat with a revolver). In 1934 he charged two people with participating in the February Revolt and of manufacturing hand grenades. |

| At the end of a police investigation it was determined that Batkes accusations were untrue and he spent 10 months in prison and was fired from his long-time job at the railway.
The 60 year old Batke had been a Nazi for eight years, was married, was the NSDAP Blockleiter in his neighborhood, and was working as a gardener in 1941 when he requested a pardon for his earlier mistakes. Very nice condition, from the collection of authors Ray & Josephine Cowdery. Comes with a signed and dated Certificate of Authenticity. |
