Hitler paintings & Priest Ephemera
The four paintings offered for sale on this web page are expert-certified original Adolf Hitler watercolor paintings owned by well-known military history authors Ray and Josephine Cowdery, and were consigned to us for sale here. These four paintings were part of a lot of property belonging to an historically important Austrian Priest, a good personal friend of Adolf Hitler; the cleric who buried Hitler’s niece, Angela “Geli” Raubal, in the Central cemetery in Wien (Vienna) in 1931.

Until purchased by the Cowderys, these paintings probably never traveled more than about 40 miles from the place they were painted almost a century ago.

The Cowderys purchased these four paintings as a portion of a lot that included a trunk full of ephemera which also belonged to the Priest. That ephemera consists in part of the original Cemetery Burial Receipt for the body of Geli Raubal, a huge set of daily dairies spanning many years, the Austrian passports of the Priest, family and other photographs, letters, documents (including some signed by Theodor Cardinal Innitzer), newspaper clippings, maps, etc. The Priest died in 1959 and there are even photographs of his corpse in a coffin.

While subjects of some of these painting may be similar to other paintings by Nazi Germany’s future 23rd Chancellor, Adolf Hitler, these paintings are different and have never been reproduced or offered for sale in America before.
,,Dorfstrasse mit Kirche, Nieder Österreich’’ by Adolf Hitler
PAINTING 1 is of a church at Easter time along a rural road running through a small town in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria). In German that painting is called ,,Dorfstrasse mit Kirche, Nieder Österreich’’ (Village Street with Church in Lower Austria). It is a watercolor on paper measuring 125 mm x 190 mm and is signed in the lower right corner “A. Hitler”. The paper, the size, signature and artistic technique are fully consistent with other works painted by Hitler while he lived in Vienna from the autumn of 1907 through May 1913. It was during this period that Hitler first came to know the Priest in question.

Franz Deuticke Wien We believe that this painting was first framed in the 1940s or 1950s, or perhaps it was reframed at that time in this frame. The backside of the frame bears the label of FRANZ DEUTICKE BUCHHANDLUNG in the SCHATTENHOF in the center of Wien, probably the framer.
Reverse side Adolf Hitler painting
This is a carefully composed, splendidly rendered, colorful small painting (about 8-1/2 x 11 inches overall frame size), typical in every way of both Austria and the artistic style of Adolf Hitler. The painting comes with two separate authentications:
  1. A professional “Expertise” or Expert Opinion from a well-known Viennese historian and art restorer, and
  2. a comprehensive, professional Certificate of Authenticity signed by both Ray and Josephine Cowdery with their signatures notarized.
Also included with the painting are color photocopies of an interesting selection of the ephemera owned by the Priest and purchased by the Cowderys with this painting.
Dorfstrasse mit Kirche, Nieder Österreich is SOLD.
,,Landschaft mit Burg am Fluß’’ by Adolf Hitler
PAINTING 2 depicts a fortress town and church alongside a river. In German it is called ,,Landschaft mit Burg am Fluß’’ (Landscape with a Fortress on a River). It is a watercolor on paper measuring 240 mm x 380 mm and is signed and dated in the lower right corner “A. Hitler 1913”. The size, the frame, paper, glass, signature and artistic technique are fully consistent with other works painted by Hitler while he lived in Vienna from the autumn of 1907 through May 1913. It was during this period that Hitler first came to know the Priest in question.

We believe that this frame is completely original to the painting, probably the frame the painting was originally sold in by the dealer, Josef Wachtl.
The backside of the frame bears the label of JOSEF WACHTL KUNST UND RAHMENHANDLUNG (Art and Frame Shop) at PLANKENGASSE 4 in the center of Wien, without doubt the framer. This frame is in very good condition with the original glass and iron hanging ring but is missing a small piece of the golden curl relief in the lower right corner (the piece has been missing for a very long time). Reverse side Hitler painting
This is a spectacularly well-composed and marvelously rendered medium size painting (about 11-1/4 x 16-1/2 inches overall frame size), typical in every way of both Austria and the artistic style of Adolf Hitler. The painting comes with two separate authentications:
  1. A professional “Expertise” or Expert Opinion from a well-known Viennese historian and art restorer, and
  2. a comprehensive, professional Certificate of Authenticity signed by both Ray and Josephine Cowdery, with their signatures notarized.
Also included with the painting are color photocopies of an interesting selection of the ephemera owned by the Priest and purchased by the Cowderys with this painting.
Landschaft mit Burg am Fluß is SOLD.
,,St. Ulrichshof, Wien'' ,,Karlskirche''
The painting St. Ulrichshof, Wien and the postcard Karls Kirche are SOLD.
