The photos show Hitler visiting his parents grave, as an art lover, being kind to children, dining with Wehrmacht soldiers, a man of the people comfortable with farmers and factory workers but also high-society ladies from Berlin. The text explains he is a peace loving man who has become a serious man aware of the responsibility he carries on his shoulders.
Wilt U de Waarheid Weten? (Do You Want to Know the Truth?) is sub-titled "Hitler - The Way They Portray Him and the Way He Really Is" is a rare heavily illustrated Third Reich photo book in the Dutch language published for the Reichskommissar of the Occupied Netherlands (Dr. Arthur Seyss-Inquart) by the Hauptabteilung für Volksaufklarung und Propaganda, the Main Nazi Propaganda Office probably late in 1940 (it is undated).
The introduction challenges people to form their own opinion about Adolf Hitler, "one of the most disputed people in the world. Millions of people hate him and millions of people in his own country admire and love him. Some people consider him the devil, some see him as the savior of his country."
This 6-1/8 x 8-5/8 inch softcover, 48 page softcover book uses Hitler's own words and photos to show "the real Hitler" as well as unflattering cartoons and caricatures from the foreign press to highlight the unfair treatment Der Führer received in the media, "trying to create a false impression about the man, his beliefs and character."
A two-page spread shows a picture on the left of a very unsightly, plump child that ran in a foreign newspaper under the headline "Adolf Hitler as a Child". On the right side is an actual picture of Hitler as a child. Those who ran the Nazi propaganda office that published this book were trying very hard to improve the image of Chancellor Hitler that prevailed in many places around the world as a result of anti-German propaganda.
The last page in the book (shown above) has an excerpt of what Hitler said about his decision to invade the Netherlands, dated 1 June 1940, and the reason behind his decision to release Dutch military prisoners after the German occupation of Holland was in place.
