There are a lot of Third Reich collectors of Heinrich Hoffmann photo books who don't even know that this book exists. It was published well after the beginning of the war and in a style slightly different from the Hoffmann Bildbände that came before it.

Deutscher Osten - Land der Zukunft (The German East - Land of the Future) is a fine 1942 Nazi rotogravure photo book published by Professor Heinrich Hoffmann (Heinrich Hoffmann Verlag München) and designed by Atto Retti Marsani.

In his foreword, Nazi Propaganda Minister Dr. Joseph Goebbels says it necessary to make sure that German blood will circulate in the east! He considered it a National Socialist obligation to make sure the occupied German territories in the East would become just as 'German' as the Fatherland and that the 'Program of the NSDAP' would be realized for all citizens of the German East.

Photos show historic buildings in the German East as well as Nazi architectural projects in Königsberg, the Reichsehrenmal in Tannenberg, a warm welcome for Hitler in Danzig and Wehrmacht troops in Graudenz, barracks for Ethnic Germans heading west to the Fatherland, BdM girls teaching ethnic German children, industries brought up to more modern German standards, the Hermann-Göring Sport Stadium in Breslau, the Annaberg, the Adolf-Hitler bridge over the Oder river at Oppeln, Germanic people, churches, scenery, etc.

Deutscher Osten - Land der Zukunft starts with a map of eastern European lands showing their early Germanic settlements. The text covers history of Ostpreussen (East Prussia) and Westpreussen (Western Prussia, including Danzig), Wartheland, Schlesien and Galicia. There is also an explanation of the Generalgouvernement and the Generalgouverneur, the highest representative of the German government.

There is a 1942 Declaration by Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler about the need for members of the Hitler Youth to work on the German future in the East, as well as a few pertinent poems. The source of every photo is mentioned on the last page (Associated Press, Klinke & Co., PK-Aufnahmen, Presse-Illustrationen Heinrich Hoffmann, RLM, Transocean, Volk und Reich, Weltbild, etc.).
