Most collectors of German World War II material are very familiar with the white porcelain figurines produced in the Munich suburb of Allach and sold by SS shops in Germany during the Third Reich of Adolf HItler, but few are acquainted with the works produced during the same period by the firm of Porzellanfabrik Lorenz Hutschenreuther in Selb, Bayern (Bavaria). Like the SS Allach figurines each Hutschenreuther piece bore the name of the designer impressed into the bottom beneath the glaze.
The Hutschenreuther figurine we offer here is the amazing 13+ inch tall bisque porcelain rendering of the Sun Worshipper, a lovely nude young lady atop a 1-5/8 inch gold ball standing on a 3-1/4 inch round base. The detail and realism in the piece is exquisite.
The Sun Worshipper is the work of renowned sculptor Karl Tutter (1883 - 1969, shown left) who trained in Austria and began his lifelong career at Porzellanfabrik Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG in Selb in 1922. His work was often exhibited in the annual exhibitions at the House of German Art in München during the Hitler era and in 1941 he won the prestigious Ehrenpreis für Plastik (Honor Prize for Sculpture) in Bayreuth.

Our picture of the base of this sculpture shows Tutter's name impressed in the white porcelain above the Hutschenreuther logo in exactly the same fashion as Prof. Th. Kärner 's name is found on some SS Allach pieces he designed. The last word in the Hutschenreuther logo is KUNSTABTEILUNG which differentiates products produced by the ARTISTIC DEPARTMENT from those produced by the Hutschenreuther department which manufactured tableware.
Porzellanfabrik Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG was a very major producer of porcelain labeled MODELL DES AMTES SCHÖNHEIT DER ARBEIT (based on the Model from the Office of Beauty of Labor of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront or German Labor Front) for various Nazi military and paramilitary organizations.
The use of the word Germany in the Hutschenreuther logo was perfectly common during the Third Reich on products produced by firms who exported a portion of their production.

CONDITION: this rare old example of the Tutter / Hutschenreuther Sun Worshipper is in fine used condition - no chips, no cracks, no perceptible wear. Examples of the Hutschenreuther Sun Worshipper in this condition are very hard to find.
