| During the Third Reich, most Jews and half-Jews in Germany were stripped of their principal civil rights as part of the ongoing effort of the German government to induce them to leave the country. As circumstances for Jews in Germany deteriorated in the late 1930s, many applied for a passport and gladly emigrated. Some struggled to remain in the country of their birth. This lot consists of a Weimar German passport issued on 18 September 1931 in the name of Kurt Schwarz, a German born resident of Madrid, Spain who traveled widely as a salesman. The passport includes entries and non-postal stamps from Brazil, Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Spain, and stamps from France and other countries. The spine of this passport has been mended. The second passport, number 25R/602/36 is a 32 page first-style Nazi Reisepass or passport issued in Berlin on 23 March 1937 in the name of the same Kurt Schwarz, a salesman and resident of Berlin. According to information in this passport Kurt Schwarz was born on 26 January 1901. He was of heavy build, had a long face, brown eyes, black hair and no distinguishing marks. |

In compliance with the new German law, Schwarz's passport was modified on 5 December 1938 by placing a large red dated capital J just to the left of the eagle on page 1. At the same time his name in the passport was changed from Kurt Lev Schwarz to Kurt Israel Lev Schwarz in compliance with the same law. It was valid for travel in and outside of Germany with the exception of travel to Spain or Austria. |
