The Murthal or Mur river valley is a beautiful and mountainous place just west of Graz in what is now Austria. Because of its location, towns in the Murthal became US Army Air Force “targets of opportunity” for heavy bombers which for any reason were unable to drop their bomb loads on Graz, Wiener Neustadt or other Nazi industrial targets in Grossdeutschland.
