| This may very well be the only surviving example of the rare custom photo album that was presented to each member of a ship’s crew as a remembrance of their visit to Berlin at the invitation of the Reichsminister of Food Production and Agriculture. |
| For reasons of commendation that are not stated in this 9-1/2 x 13-1/2 inch, 19 page photo album, the entire crew of the Kriegsmarine Zerstörer Diether von Roeder (Navy Destroyer 51) was invited to tour Berlin, the capital of Nazi Germany, from 4 - 7 July 1941. |
| A photographer accompanied the crew as they visited the principal sights - the Brandenburger Gate, Sans Soucci Castle at Potsdam, the Neue Wache, the Military Museum in the Zeughaus, Olympic Stadium. an evening in Hermann Göring’s Haus der Flieger, a meeting with the mayor, an evening at the Scala cabaret, etc., etc.
The photographer took pictures of the officers and men enjoying themselves and those pictures were assembled into special photo albums like this one.
| This example of the special Berlin visit commendation photo album was presented to Diether von Roeder crewman Matrose Karl Heinz Pomarius who sent it home for safekeeping. |
| In addition to the 40+ special 3-1/4 x 4-1/2 inch professional photographs in the albums, there is a photo portrait of the entire ship’s crew mounted for framing on a 9-1/2 x 12 inch card, a printed and embossed invitation from the Mayor of Berlin for Matrose Pomarius to a reception at Berlin City Hall, and a three page minute-by-minute itinerary of the entire visit to Berlin. |
| Of special interest are the four photographs on page 4 of this album which show the senior officers of the Diether von Roeder in full uniform meeting the Reichsminister für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (State Minister of Food Production and Agriculture) wearing the grey-green uniform of an Honorary General in the SS. |
| As stated above, the recipient of this album was Matrose Karl Heinz Pomarius who died for the “Führer and Fatherland” on 21 November 1943. Included with this album is a letter to his parents from one of his comrades informing them of his death. |
| This lot also includes several other Feldpost letters related to Pomarius.
In a separate listing, we are offering the “Cruise Album” of Matrose Karl Heinz Pomarius aboard the ,,Diether von Roeder’’.
This presentation album may be unique. It is complete and in very good condition.
