This is an outstanding 9-1/2 x 9-1/2 inch, 98 page, very heavily illustrated hardcover book called ,,Fahrbahn Lappland’’ (Lapland Highway) as published Mens-Verlag in Höchstadt in 1944, that covers the winter service of mechanized Wehrmacht Gebirgsjäger (mountain troop) units in polar regions of Lapland.

The book starts with a wonderful full-page portrait of Knights Cross of the Iron Cross (with Oak Leaves) winner General Dietl at Christmas 1943, shown at the right.

There is an excellent four page text which is followed by page after page of spectacular, clear, full-page black and white photographs of not only the scenery of Lapland, but of the men, equipment and daily service of the German Gebirgsjäger troops that kept military supplies moving there.

There are photos of the “North and South Express” trains, Wehrmacht housing, formations, soldier graves, trucks, barracks, inspections, snow plows and snow plow trucks, truck repairs, busses, nurses, muddy roads, combat troops, guard posts, warehouses, flak guns, machine gun practice, partisan warning signs, aircraft, and the trip back home to the mountains of Großdeutschland.
Exceedingly very rare Gebirgsjäger / Lappland material that was produced in a very limited quantity. Inscribed in the front as a “Remembrance of the Good and Bad Days in Lapland”, dated 1 August 1944 and signed by one of the officers of the outfit. Very good condition.
