This is a wonderful 36 x 54 inch oilcloth multi-color Luftwaffe aerial navigation map for the area from Oslo, Norway to Leningrad in the Soviet Union to Konya in Turkey and Marsala on the Italian island of Sicily. It covers the entire Eastern Front from Odessa to the swamps of Smolensk and the Ladoga See. This would be a very basic map for anyone flying against Russian positions on the Ostfront or Allied Forces in the Mediterranean.
While other maps in the series went well to the east beyond the territory included on this Luftwaffe map, the number 3 Ostsee - Balkan map is certainly one of the most important historically. This is the map produced for the General Staff of the Luftwaffe in 1940 but updated to 15 October 1943. It is probably the last Luftwaffe map used anywhere on the Eastern Front. The map covers 51° at a scale of 1=2,000,000.
As you can see this map is in nice original condition, still with its bright colors and very flexible. It has one tiny hole in the lower border near the left side and a few small light spots when held up to a window and viewed from the back side. It has no major cuts, tears or repairs. The brown stains at the top do not get into the map area anywhere.
A great piece of German military and World War II Nazi aviation history.
