| This is a spectacular if somewhat obscure book on the life and death of the most renowned aviator of World War I, Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron. It is the book Mein Kriegstagebuch - die Erinnerungen der Mutter des roten Kampffliegers (My War Diary - Memories of the Mother of the Red Fighter Pilot), by Kunigunde Freifrau von Richthofen, the Red Baron’s mother. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The 5-7/8 x 8-3/4 inch, 196 page, heavily illustrated half-leather hard cover book was published in 1937 by Verlag Ullstein in Berlin, has a foreword by Generalobert Hermann Göring and contains 43 photographs from the von Richthofen family archives.
The mother begins her narrative at the end of July 1914 when World War I began, but the photos begin considerably earlier when Manfred von Richthofen was two. Manfred is shown alone as a child, with his grandmother Baroness Richthofen, with his sister Ilse, at age 7, as a Cadet, and there are pictures of both his parents as well. As the diary continues the pictures all relate to Manfred and his brother Lothar and their compatriots in the service of the German Luftwaffe. |

| There are pictures from Jadgstaffel 11 (Fighter Squadron 11), pictures of Festner, Schäfer, Wolff, Krefft, Carganico, Gerstenberg, General von Hoeppner, General von Falkenhausen, Manfred with Anthony Fokker, Manfred and his doggie Moritz, sister Ilse as a nurse, with his father and brother in the Lazarett at Douai (all in uniform), etc. There are photos of a variety of Manfred von Richthofen’s planes, his uniforms and coats, in civilian clothes, with his comrades and even airplanes he shot down. He is pictured wounded in the hospital, with Kaiser Wilhelm, Kaiser Wilhelm’s wife, Reichskanzler Michaelis and with Generalfeldmarschall von Hindenburg. There is even a picture of his heavily decorated grave taken and presented by the British Royal Air Force! The narrative is excellent, written by one of the people who knew von Richthofen best - his mother. The photographic content of the book is spectacular coming as it did from the family album! This 71 year old book is in very good condition. |
