| Almost everyone with an interest in Third Reich history is aware of the Grosse Deutsche Kunstaustellung (Greater German Art Exhibition) held each year at the House of German Art in München (Munich) from 1937 to 1944, but few know of the older but equally famous annual Grosse Münchener Kunstaustellung (Great Munich Art Exhibits). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Until it burned to the ground on 6 June 1931 the Kunstaustellung München was held at the famous Glaspalast. The later exhibitions were held at the Neue Pinakothek and then at the Maximilianeum from 1937 onward. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| More specialized than the Grosse Deutsche Kunstaustellung, the Münchener Kunstaustellung featured artists principally from Bayern or Bavaria. They were mostly people whose work also were chosen for exhibit at the Grosse Deutsche Kunstaustellung but some were featured only at the Münchener Kunstaustellung. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| They were superb artists like Eduard Thoney, Elk Eber, Kurt Schmid-Ehmen, Hans Wimmer, Hermann Kaspar, Richard Huber-Dachau, Hans Schwegerle, Leo Samberger, Paul Padua, Walter Rose, Josef Wackerle, Fritz Behn, Sepp Hilz, Theodor Linz, Lothar Dietz, Ferdinand Liebermann, Ottmar Obermaier, Paul Roloff, and others. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Like the Grosse Deutsche Kunstaustellung, the Münchener Kunstaustellung showed busts of the Führer Adolf Hitler, uniformed SS men and other soldier portraits, nudes, Hitler Youth boys, troops in trenches, still lives, the Reichautobahn, pretty aryan women, animals, old men, landscapes, flowers and even Il Duce, Benito Mussolini. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| In the books there are of course, floor plans of the galleries and plenty of information about the exhibited works and the artists. The front covers of the Grosse Münchener Kunstaustellung books typically feature the head of Athina, the goddess of art and war, as did the guidebooks for the Grosse Deutsche Kunstaustellung. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In both the front and back of most books there are pages of advertising for art materials, fine art dealers, porcelain manufacturers, Heinrich Hoffmann Photo Studios and the like. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| We have never seen such a wonderful collection of Munich Art Exhibition guidebooks as this one.
Each heavily illustrated book is an historical art resource without equal and all are very hard to find in the 21st century. Other than the dirty cover on the 1929 book, all are complete and in very good condition. |
