A 24 DAY
FULL-COLOR SECULAR NAZI
ADVENT-TYPE CHRISTMAS CALENDAR
This Nazi Christmas calendar is an outstanding example of the approach taken by the National Socialists in secularizing what had previously had been religious holidays.
This 6-1/4 x 9 inch full-color soft cover, 36 page
Vorweihnachten (Pre-Christmas) book was published by the Nazi Party's
Reichsorganisationsleiter / Hauptschulungsamt in cooperation with the
Hauptkulturamt in der Reichspropagandaleitung for distribution to German mothers.
Like a religious Advent calendar, the book provided activities and lessons on a day-by-day basis from the 1st through the 24th of December, but without the religious orientation found in traditional Advent calendars.
The activities ranged from complex explanations of ancient Germanic traditions to craft projects using things like pine cones and nut shells, to picture puzzles. There are also illustrations of Wehrmacht soldiers and equipment.
There are beautifully rendered traditional designs of flowers and wildlife incorporating swastikas, runes and other Nazi symbols. Poetry, songs and legends illustrate important lessons from the aryan past of the country's history and nature.
Christmas cookie recipes, the concept of decorating a tree with candles and ornaments is intermingled with little Nazi Hitler Youth boys having snowball fights in their Schneebunker. The importance of family, racial hygiene, ancestry and a soldierly life are very heavily stressed in this book.
Based on the paper used in the manufacturing, we estimate this is a 1943 or 1944 advent calendar. It is in very good original condition, with a tiny piece of the lower left corner missing.
