This lot consists of THREE issues of DIE KUNST IM DEUTSCHEN REICH, unread, like-new and still in their original Third Reich eagle and swastika protective envelopes as produced by the Zentralverlag der NSDAP, the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party, Franz Eher of Munich. They are the September, November and December 1943 Ausgabe A issues of the fancy, oversized 11 x 14 inch Nazi art magazine, "The Arts in the German Reich".
The magazine was large in size, huge is scope and right to the end it was published at the direction of Chancellor Adolf Hitler himself by Zentralverlag der NSDAP, Franz Eher Nachfolger on fine quality paper using the best available inks.
The publication was under the supervision of an extremely prestigious group of directors that included Reichsminister Professor Albert Speer of Berlin, Professor Richard Klein of the Academy of Applied Arts in München and Professor Leonhard Gall of Studio Troost in Munich. Huge full-page, full-color and black & white photographs dominated the format of Die Kunst im Deutschen Reich. Many of the pictures were never published elsewhere and none were published in a larger format.
This magazine lot includes a rare and historic letter (shown left) inserted by Ackermann-Deutsche Verlagsexpedition, the distributor the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party used for Stuttgart and the surrounding area. The letter is an apology for not being able to deliver the double issue 7 / 8 of Die Kunst im Deutschen Reich due to the warehouse and distribution facility burning down after a Terrorangriff, an Allied bombing raid. Since the facility was completely destroyed and all the inventory was lost, the customer would receive a credit on the next bill. The letter was signed off with Heil Hitler! There is an additional card for subscribers who were bombed out, to let the publisher know their new or temporary address.
The SEPTEMBER 1943 edition contains fine female nude sculpture by Robert Ullmann, art by Hans Holbein to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of the German artist, a fine ink illustration of a U-Boot by Lothar Günther Buchheim, and a striking watercolor of a Nazi tank with its crew at rest by Franz Eichhorst (shown at the top of this USMBOOKS web page).
The NOVEMBER 1943 issue of Die Kunst im Deutschen Reich contains superb new work of famous sculptor Arno Breker (including a bust of Mrs. Martin Bormann) and the paintings in the Greater German Art Exhibition of 1943.
The DECEMBER 1943 art magazine contains amazing new sculptures by Josef Thorak including nudes and a bust of Reichsminister Dr. Fritz Todt (shown right), Friedrich Stahl paintings.
The three 75 year old magazines each have 24 pages and are in very fine condition - bright colors, no writing, nothing torn out, no odor. Each of the magazines comes with an original publisher's envelope which show wear. While this lot does not include the October issue of Die Kunst im Deutschen Reich, there is an envelope for it.
