This is a splendid original souvenir of an illustrious German Mountain Troop Division that campaigned on many fronts during World War II. It is a big, heavy, solid brass ashtray bearing the reindeer head emblem of the 2nd Gebirgs Division in the center. Around the rim are the dates 1942 - 1943 separated by an Edelweiss flower, along with the inscription 2. GEBIRGS DIVISION.
The division was raised in Austria after the Anschluß in 1938 and supplemented with Germany troops. After fighting in Poland they served in Norway before being transferred to the west front.
Retreating back through Germany much of the division was destroyed in combat in southern Germany near the end of the war.
This ashtray was probably made in Norway and sent back home by a Gebirgsjäger before the division was re-deployed south. We bought it in Germany. Very nice antique patina and in very good original condition, exactly as shown in our pictures. A worthy centerpiece to any collection of Gebirgsjaeger material!
