This is a brand-new-old-stock Wehrmacht winter cap that came out of the same cardboard box as the Waffen-SS uniform, the Luftwaffe uniform and other miscellaneous Third Reich items we purchased recently. The lot had been accumulated by a single GI in Europe near the end of World War II and had not been touched since he brought it home in 1945. None of the items have ever been in the hands of a collector or messed with by a dealer.
This grey-green wool and rabbit fur Wehrmacht winter cap is brand new-old-stock, it was never issued and it was never worn in service. The entire inside of the flap and the front of the cap are covered in rabbit fur. The cap itself is made of the same grey-green wool material as a standard Nazi Army overcoat. The inside of the cap and the inside surface of the flap are grey-green rayon material, the same material used by the Germans in the manufacture of padded pants (Keilhosen) and jacket liners.
The Nazi eagle on the front of this cap measures 2-1/2 inches (65 mm) from wing tip to wing tip. Inside the cap is well marked with the name of its manufacturer, Walter Hübner of Charlottenstrasse 29-30, Berlin W8, a description of the Hübner enterprise (Fashionable Fur Clothing and Smoking Accessories) and the date 1943.
This is a very well made piece of German Army clothing from the mid-war days when even the fanciest Berlin fashion furriers were making clothing for the Nazi Army and the Waffen-SS. Excellent condition.
