USM book #316
|
This is a rare 6 x 8-1/4 inch, 48 page Third Reich children’s book called Kinder und Arbeitsmaiden (Children and Labor Girls) by Arsel Schlicht with superb drawings by Inge Steuer. It was published by Junge Generation Verlag of Berlin and it is undated (it is from the very late 1930s or early 1940s).
This heavily illustrated Nazi book for children explains in simple language the concept and work of a group of German Labor Service girls from the city in a small rural village. From the daily flag raising ceremony at the RAD barracks where the girls live, to their service to the community: helping out farmers with farm chores, helping farmer’s wives take care of their children, educating village children, helping mothers with newborn babies, celebrating Easter and Christmas with the local population, and even participating in village dances.
This rare example of Kinder und Arbeitsmaiden is complete and in very good used condition.
On the last page the author explains the reason for this book: the importance of the Arbeitsmaiden experience for girls and the positive influence of German Labor Service girls in small communities.
