Deutsche Jugend, Dein Führer, Der Junge Staat Heft 1,
Der Junge Staat (The Young State) was a new National Socialist educational book series for school-aged German children launched in 1933 by Hans Schemm and his Bayreuth National Socialist Cultural Publishing House. Schemm was the head of the NS-Lehrerbund (NSLB or Nazi Teachers League) which he had founded in 1929. Schemm was also the Gauleiter of Bayerische Ostmark and Reichsstatthalter of Bavaria. Later, on 4 January 1934, Hitler named Schemm head (Hauptamtsleiter) of the Main Office for Education in the national headquarters of the NSDAP.
Fips, Philipp Rupprecht
Deutsche Jugend, Dein Führer (German Youth, Your Leader) is Book Number 1 from the series Der Junge Staat. It was published in 1933 which is referred to Italian-style as “The Year of the Awakening of the Nation” on the title page, and it is the earliest book we have ever seen illustrated by the German artist “Fips” who is is called Kunstmaler or painter Phil. Rupprecht on the title page.

The 36 illustrations in Deutsche Jugend, Dein Führer are by Fips (Philipp Rupprecht, shown in the reference photo above), the well-known illustrator of Julius Streicher’s anti-Jewish Der Stürmer newspaper and the extremely anti-Jewish books Der Giftpilz (The Poison Mushroom) and Trau keinem Fuchs (Never Trust a Fox.…).

Illustrator Philipp Rupprecht was born in Nürnberg, Germany on 4 September 1900 and at age 20 he traveled to Argentina where he worked as a waiter and a cowboy. Returning to Germany a couple of years later he began a career as cartoonist at the Fränkischen Tagespost, a Socialist newspaper. He was told to draw a cartoon of Frankenführer and Nazi Gauleiter Julius Streicher, but instead he drew a cartoon of Streicher’s opponent and Lord Mayor of Nürnberg, Hermann Luppe. This action brought him to the attention of Streicher who hired him to work at Der Stürmer in the mid-1920s.

Under the professional name Fips, Rupprecht became the caricaturist for Der Stürmer for which he created the “stereotypical Jew”; swarthy and unshaven, with a big nose and bulging eyes. He served in the Kriegsmarine but worked for Der Stürmer until the very last issue in February 1945.
This educational Nazi publication is all about the different stages of the life of Adolf Hitler. The heavily illustrated chapters cover his birth in Braunau in 1889, his youth in the rural area, his time in Vienna and Munich, Hitler’s military service in World War I, the early days of the Nazi Party, the November 1923 Putsch and imprisonment in Landsberg, all through 21 March 1933, the “Day of Potsdam”, which was the official opening of German Parliament with the National Socialists in charge.
