Christmas was of course, the biggest holiday of the year in all of Germany, and that did not change materially because of the Nazi Party or the Second World War. In fact, this is certainly one of the prettiest books published in Germany in the year 1944. It is the 4th edition of the rare Deutsche Kriegsweihnacht, a special printing by the Nazi Party Archives for Nationalsozialistische Feier- und Freizeitgestaltung die neue Gemeinschaft as published by the Hauptkulturamt der NSDAP in der Reichspropagandaleitung. The book was edited by Hermann Liese with artwork by Julia Suwelack, Wilhelm Busch, Hero Rhode and Wolfgang Stumme. The illustrations are superb and beautifully colored.
Following quotations by Friedrich Hölderlin and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, there is a quotation from Dr. Joseph Goebbels facing a picture of Adolf Hitler in front of a Christmas tree. The book contains many more inspirational quotations, poems, songs, and reflections by people like Adolf Hitler, Dietrich Eckart, Kurt Eggers, Thilo Scheller, Walter Flex and others. The emphasis is, as always, Home and Fatherland.
There are recollections of Nazi Christmases past, and even one about the Austrian SA Christmas of 1933. A lot of them were written by soldiers about soldiers and serve the purpose of contributing a positive force under very difficult circumstances.
While the color woodcuts exude Christmas joy in the normal German fashion, the black & white illustrations have a sad tone of living uncomfortably in distant places and the loss of companions in war.
The separately bound songbook contains the most popular of all the old German standards. The books are rarely found together as originally published, and almost never in this excellent condition.
