SS-Gruppenführer Oswald Pohl
Deutsche Ansiedlungsgesellschaft Zweigstelle Wien
This lot consists of three pieces of original letter correspondence without envelopes dated 1939, 1941 and 1942regarding valuable property belonging to Dr. Bela von Wodianer. The correspondence is from the Deutsche Ansiedlungsgesellschaft (German Homestead Enterprise), a business which started out as a mortgage bank in 1898 but during the Third Reich had enormous authority over confiscated and forfeited property. In 1939 the Deutsche Ansiedlungsgesellschaft became part of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler’s program to resettle ethnic Germans (Volksdeutsche) in Germany, and SS-Gruppenführer Oswald Pohl was the head of the Board of Directors.
Oswald Pohl was a member of the SA and a member of the Nazi Party since 1926. He became the Chief of Administration of the SS and Germany’s Treasurer in 1935, he oversaw the Nazi Konzentrationslager or concentration camp system and was heavily involved in Heinrich Himmler’s Projekt Wewelsburg. In February 1942 he became the head of the new SS-Wirtschafts-Verwaltungshauptamt (SS-WVHA or the SS Main Office for Economic Administration), the office was in charge of the concentration camp system and the use of slave labor in concentration camp industries. On 20 April 1942 he was promoted to SS-Obergruppenführer and General of the Waffen-SS. Later the same year he married Eleonore von Brüning, the widow of one of the founders of IG Farben.
Pohl and Himmler
Oswald Pohl’s name, rank and position appear on two of the three letterheads of this rare Third Reich correspondence regarding the lease of Dr. Bela von Wodianer’s property in Neubistritz in Gau Niederdonau (now Nová Bystrice in the Czech Republic) to the Reichsdomänenverwaltung, the German state agency in charge of redistributing property under the umbrella of the Deutsche Ansiedlungsgesellschaft. The correspondence is regarding the value of the property (according to Dr. von Wodianer and according to administrators of the Deutsche Ansiedlungsgesellschaft), percentage of lease payments, lease payments transfered to Dr. Bela von Wodianer’s bank account and other details. The earliest letter in this lot, dated 25 November 1939 to Dr. Bela von Wodianer in Budapest, shows that at that time the Deutsche Ansiedlungsgesellschaft was still part of the SS Rasse- und Siedlungshauptamt (SS Race and Settlement Office).

Very, very rare original SS resettlement correspondence, virtually all of which was destroyed before the end of the war.
