THE FRENCH
YELLOW BOOK |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This is a nice example of the rare 6 x 8-5/8 inch, 420 page hard cover book THE FRENCH YELLOW BOOK - Diplomatic Documents 1938-1939 as published in English by authority of the French government by Reynal & Hitchcock in New York in 1940. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| This book, like THE BRITISH BLUE WAR BOOK offered below and the German Library of Information NY book DOCUMENTS ON THE EVENTS PRECEDING THE OUTBREAK OF THE WAR also offered below, is absolutely fundamental reading for anyone seriously interested in the history of World War II. Along with books like Look to Germany by Stanley McClatchie, these contemporary documents provide unique insights into important thoughts and events long forgotten in the 21st century. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

THE FRENCH YELLOW BOOK provides English transcripts (in perfect American-English!) of the very highest level French and Nazi diplomatic communications and traffic during the time just preceding World War II, or as the French put it, Papers relative to the events and negotiations which preceded the opening of hostilities between Germany on the one hand, and Poland, Great Britain and France on the other.
While published to document the French perspective on those events to a very largely disinterested American public in 1940, France had not yet been humiliated by Hitler at Compiègne so the tone is fair and the text of the German documents is accurate. |

| The documents translated into English are from the level of Führer / Prime Minister / Ambassador and provide an incredible glimpse of the inner workings of not only the French diplomatic service, but the diplomatic services of Nazi Germany, Great Britain, Fascist Italy, the Vatican, Belgium, the Netherlands and even the USA. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The documents begin in March of 1938 as Austria was absorbed into Grossdeutschland and Hitler was demanding the return of Sudeten German lands from Czechoslovakia, and include the Munich Agreement in which the governments of France, England and Italy quietly agreed to Hitlers demands. They continue with top secret correspondence related to the Nazi occupation of all that remained of Czechoslovakia after the Hungarians and Poles got what they wanted, and then cover events leading to the joint German / Russian invasion of Poland in September 1939. The historic book ends just short of explaining why France and Great Britain declared war on germany BUT DID NOT DECLARE WAR ON RUSSIA for their invasion and occupation of approximately 3/5th of Poland. An excellent Appendix. Very good condition. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

THE BRITISH BLUE WAR BOOK
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This is a nice ex-library example of the rare 5-3/4 x 8-1/2 inch, 252 page hard cover book THE BRITISH BLUE WAR BOOK providing Documents concerning German-Polish relations and the outbreak of hostilities between Great Britain and Germany on September 3, 1939 as prepared by the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and published by Farrar & Rinehart in New York in 1939. | ![]() |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Very similar to the FRENCH YELLOW BOOK in its approach, this book sought to enlist American public opinion on the side of the British rather than on the side of the Germans. It must have been a very effective vehicle as America was drawn into World War II in Europe within a matter of months of its publication. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Nice condition.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The German Library of Information in New York book DOCUMENTS ON THE EVENTS PRECEDING THE OUTBREAK OF THE WAR, 1940.
Similar in its approach to the two books offered above, the German version is substantially larger, far more comprehensive and contains a 48 page photographic supplement on glossy paper. |

| It also contains a very compelling introduction and a preface by Joachim von Ribbentrop. There is a superb index, and no other document we know of translates the German documents into English better. Very good condition. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
