EAGLES AND SWASTIKAS OF THE THIRD REICH

The eagle combined with the swastika is a very powerful symbol and Adolf Hitler and the Nazi leadership already knew it in the 1920s. During the Third Reich (1933 - 1945) it was the symbol of German renewal as well as the Nazi state, and was known in German as the Hoheitszeichen or Hoheitsabzeichen (“National Emblem”). Its use for any official purpose was encouraged by the Nazis and it appeared over the years in hundreds, probably thousands of variations.

It seems strange to us that in a land where so may striking eagles were developed during the brief Third Reich, a recent government of Germany was willing to pay British architect Sir Norman Foster $32,000.00 (in 1996) to design the eagle that looks like a turkey (and is known as the Fette Henne) that now graces the main wall of the revamped Reichstag in Berlin.
