This is a nice example of the very heavy, very large, hard-to-find 1-3/4 x 9 x 11-1/4 inch, 576 page, very, very heavily illustrated half-leather hard cover book ,,Bayern im Ersten Vierjahresplan’’ (Bavaria in the First [Nazi] Four Year Plan) published by the Zentralverlag der NSDAP Franz Eher Nachfolger in München (Munich), Germany for the Bavarian Government in 1937.

The beautifully bound 5 pound book was a presentation piece intended to cover every aspect of the progress that had been made in Bavaria during the first four years of Nazi government. Following a foreword by Ministerpräsident Siebert and Gauleiter Wagner, the book moves directly into the accomplishments of the NSDAP in Bayern.

Those accomplishments include establishing a reliable police force at every level, the National Socialist Community, taxes, housing for the poor and homeless, health, providing for the HJ and BdM, sports, new schools, buildings of the new state, art in the National Socialist State, agriculture, new towns, forestry, etc., etc.

Naturally, since München was the Capital of Bavaria and the Capital of the Nazi Movement (Hauptstadt der Bewegung), the new buildings had a decidedly Nazi look and purpose.

Nürnberg is in the center of Bavaria so the improvements to the Reichsparteitaggelände (Nazi Party Day Grounds) there were a source of pride to those who wrote this book. The Reichsautobahn and its daughter project, the Deutsche Alpenstrasse also impacted Bavaria heavily and are well covered here.

In addition to the many, many photographs in this rare book there are six large fold-outs of things like the Deutsche Alpenstrasse, the road-river-highway network of the State of Bavaria, reorientation of land ownership along the Reichsautobahn. There are full-page portraits in the front of Ritter von Epp, Ludwig Siebert and Adolf Wagner and a terrific photo of seven Nazi Schutzpolizei, all wearing their Blood Order medal (Blutorden).

If you have an interest in Bavaria, the reorganization of the German police under the Nazis, or the changes that took place in Germany during the first four years of the Third Reich, this book is an excellent source of information and photographs.
