As Third Reich animal books go, this is probably the best of them all. Das Haustierbuch is a large 11 x 13-1/2 inch, 240 page heavily, heavily coffee table style book published in 1938 by Deutsche Buch-Gemeinschaft in Berlin.
Das Haustierbuch (The Domestic Animal Book) by Paul Eipper provides a perfect examination of the position of domesticated animals in Third Reich society. Not only does the book cover the obvious such as riding, jumping, racing and harness racing horses, it also covers draft horses, oxen, donkeys, Lipizzaners, carriage teams and horses in the Army.
A good deal of space is devoted to working dogs like the Doberman and Schäferhunden (German Shepherds) but also to pet dogs, hounds and dogs for the blind. There are cats of all descriptions, eagles, hawks and falcons, sheep, goats, swine, peacocks, turkeys, pigeons, ducks, geese, swans, chickens, rabbits and fur bearers like the raccoon, nutria, fox, etc. Also classified as domesticated animals and covered in this book are silkworms, bees, canaries, parrots, fish, frogs and turtles, storks, owls, etc.
This is a beautiful hardbound, linen covered book with a blue leather spine with gold blocking. It weighs nearly 4 pounds and covers the subject of domestic animals and pets in the Third Reich like no other book we know. Very good condition.
