This is a nice original example of the very rare 6-1/4 x 8-1/4 inch, 224 page, well-illustrated hard cover book Militärmusik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (Military Music in History and Today) by Dr. Peter Panoff as published by Verlag Karl Siegismund in Berlin in 1944.
Following an introduction by Ministerpräsident und Generalfeldmarschall Hermann Göring, the very scholarly book presents not only a history of military music over the centuries but a comprehensive examination of the subject during the Third Reich. It explains in great detail how musical groups such as marching bands and orchestras are arranged, where the conductor and the Schellenbaum are to be placed and even what music is to be played.
Certainly, marching bands achieved a status and exposure under the Nazis that has never been equaled in Germany in the years since. Under the National Socialists, every town, military and paramilitary unit in the country had a marching band and today the only marching bands in Germany are poorly equipped amateur police bands that can’t play a piece that anybody could name.
If you want to know the rich history of German marching music and its importance during the Third Reich, this is the book that will tell you. Some scotch tape on the cover, but the contents is complete and in very good condition.
