Nazi flag & SS sign
This is an original 60 year old oil painting on board that we purchased many years ago from a second generation art and antique dealer on Westenriederstraße in München (Munich), Germany. The dealer’s showroom was only about one block from the very first office of the Nazi Party, at Tal 54.

The 40 x 53 cm (15-7/8 x 20-7/8 inch) silvered wood frame is original to the 38 x 50.5 cm painting. The painting is signed “Hartmann 43.” and is an extremely realistic and well-done study of a shady courtyard or “Hof” inside an arched wall.

The sun is shining on the subject of the work, the three story building on the right hand. It has a NSDAP / SS sign on the wall and a Nazi flag flying from the roof behind the leaves of a tree in the foreground. While we can not read the sign in its entirety, enough of it can be read to ascertain that the building is the office of a “SS Abschnitt” or “Section”, a local headquarters.

The backside of the board on which the scene is painted has two stamps on it. The one at the top is that of the firm of Karl Schmidt of Bad Salzungen, the Glasermeister who framed it. The stamp in the center of the back says the picture is the property of Junkers Aircraft and Motor Works in Dessau and is dated 1943. The entire Junkers stamp has been crossed out with a pencil and has an illegible notation handwritten in pencil written below it.

The painting is in very good condition with only a few minor chips or blemishes to the surface. The frame is also in very good condition except for chips to the plastered silver surface in the lower left hand corner. Paintings with this sort of subject matter have become virtually impossible to find in the last fifteen years.

This painting is a perfect size for any collector’s den or office, and is very, very well done.
