Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler
Baldur von Schirach, Reichsstatthalter Wien
Nazi Interior Ministry Berlin
1942 Nazi correspondence file about a Police promotion
Nazi medals
This 1942 Third Reich correspondence lot provides a rare insight into the inner-workings of Nazi Germany, and the in-depth attention given to every official position in Grossdeutschland. In this case, the promotion request of Feldpolizeikommissar Dr. Adalbert Herrmann, Feldpost number 31244, sent by the office of Baldur von Schirach, Reichsstatthalter (the highest Nazi government authority) of Wien to the office Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, the Reichsminister des Innern (Minister of the Interior) on Unter den Linden 72 in central Berlin.

Dr. Adalbert Herrmann (born in 1913) worked his way up the ladder through the Hitler Youth and SA to a desk job at police headquarters in Vienna (the second largest city of Greater Germany) to Police Inspector of the Salary Department, and at the same time he finished his law studies and received his Doctorate in Law.
According to the letter from Vienna Reichsstatthalter to the Interior Ministry in Berlin dated 16 September 1942, Dr. Herrmann was a member of the Hitler Youth (and holder of the HJ Goldenes Ehrenzeichen), a member of the SA since June 1933, a member of the SS since 1935 (rank Obersturmführer) and he was to be considered an Alte Kämpfer der Bewegung (Old Fighter of the Nazi Movement) as he had joined the Nazi Party in 1933 (NSDAP membership number 6.131.737).
As a member of the Feldpolizei he took part in the Nazi invasions of Poland, Belgium, Holland, France and Russia. His many medals are listed in the letter (Golden Hitler Youth Badge, Ostmark Medal, War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords, Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, Infantry Assault Badge, Eastern Front Medal, Krim Shield, and several high Rumanian decorations).

The promotion request letter also states that Baldur von Schirach's official representative Oberregierungsrat Dr. Makarius had personally met with Dr. Herrmann and that he had left a very favorable impression, and that Dr. Herrmann had the qualities of a leader.
The Reichsministerium des Innern responded to the request of the office of the Reichsstatthalter Wien on 3 October 1941. After checking all the information provided and taking Dr. Herrmann's military service into consideration, the request was approved. The letter also confirms that Dr. Herrmann will have 12 months to prepare for the obligatory state exams he will need to pass for the new position, and that he will be notified directly about the steps of the process.

According to stamps and handwritten notes on this file Abschrift or official archive copy, the Office of Baldur von Schirach on Ballhausplatz 2 received this letter from the Interior Ministry in Berlin on 8 October 1942. On the same day an official copy of the correspondence was mailed to the Head of Police in Vienna on Schottenring 11 in downtown Vienna.

This correspondence is absolutely original to the Third Reich. It consists of the official archival copies from 1942 which were obtained in Vienna, where they were destined to be shredded by city officials bent on destroying any connection of Austria with Nazi Germany. Very rare!
