When the NSDAP quarters on Schellingstrasse 50 in Munich became too small for the growing Nazi Party, famous German industrialist Fritz Thyssen purchased Palais Barlow on the Briennerstraße (between the Karolinenplatz and the Königsplatz) in Munich from the widow of English industrialist Willy Barlow who had owned the stately building (built in 1828), since 1877. Thyssen paid 805,864 Marks and donated the large building to the NSDAP. Architect Paul Ludwig Troost oversaw major renovations and worked with architectural drawings supplied by Adolf Hitler. By 1931, the Reichsleitung der NSDAP had completely moved in. The official address of the Braunes Haus was Brienner Straße 45.
Until 1937, when construction of the huge Führerbau and Verwaltungsbau on the Arcisstrasse (around the corner) was finished, the Braunes Haus was the home of the leadership of the SA, the Reichspressestelle, and high ranking party officials such as Hitler, Rudolf Hess and Hans Frank. It was the official office of the staff of the Stellvertreter des Führers, the Deputy Führer. The Braunes Haus is also the building where the Blutfahne (Nazi Blood Flag) was stored.
The building was damaged during an Allied air raid on the night of 2 - 3 October 1943. Only two walls were left after it got hit again during an Allied air raid the night of 7 January 1945. It was torn down in 1947 and the lot remained empty for decades. Plans for a National Socialist documentation center (NS-Dokumentationszentrum) were passed by miscellaneous local and federal government agencies, but Munich city funds and Bavarian state funds have not been made available, so the plans were shelved.
