This is the real thing, not some modern invention. It is an 11 inch (28 cm) yellow and red round steel sign on which it says Deutscher Alpenverein Deutscher Ski-Verband Ski-Weg or German Alpine Union German Ski Club Ski Trail. There are four holes in the face of the sign at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock for nailing it to a tree. The sign was sponsored by the company Pigmentan, a manufacturer of sunscreen cream and their name and slogan appear at the bottom (Pigmentan - Protection against Sunburn). The sign was manufactured by Julius Kleemann of Dettingen/Main, Germany after 1938 and before 1945.
The Deutscher Alpenverein was know for decades as the Deutscher- und Oesterreichischer Alpenverein eV. until Österreich (Austria) became a part of Greater Germany in March/April 1938. Thereafter, until 1945 the organization was known as the Deutscher Alpenverein as shown on this sign.
A great piece of unusual Third Reich ski history in excellent original condition. This sign is in New-Old-Stock condition. That is to say, it was made but never nailed to a tree. There is black soot-y residue on the front side which will probably come off with a good cleaning and the proper soap. The paint is virtually 100% there with a few minor scratches.
