This is a wonderful original grouping of the highest level of Third Reich ephemera that provides a rare glimpse inside the workings of diplomatic service of the Germany of Adolf Hitler. All the pieces were the personal property of German Cabinet member and Reichsminister of Post and Communications (Reichsverkehrs- und Reichspostminister), Dr. Wilhelm Ohnesorge.
The lot consists of a 6-3/8 x 9 inch envelope addressed to Frau Reichsminister Dr. Ohnesorge at her residence on Insterburgallee 24 in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
The three items in the envelope are 1) an embossed 5 x 7-5/8 inch, eagle and swastika gold-bordered invitation from the ,,Führer und Reichskanzler’’ Adolf Hitler, inviting Herrn Staatssekretär Dr.Ing. e.h. Ohnesorge and his wife to a state dinner on 3 February 1937 at 8:30 in the evening in honor of foreign ambassadors to Germany, ....
2) a large cream colored, deckle-edged 13-3/4 x 18-1/2 inch seating plan for the dinner at the Haus des Reichskanzlers (Hitler’s residence in Berlin) in question showing who sat where in relationship to Adolf Hitler at the head of the table. The seat of Frau Ohnesorge is marked in red while those of Dr. Ohnesorge, Ministerpräsident Generaloberst Hermann Goering, Rudolf Hess, Generalbauinspektor Professor Albert Speer, Dr. Ing. Fritz Todt, Reichsführer-SS Himmler, Admiral Raeder, Reichsleiter Rosenberg, Dr. Meissner, Reichsminister Darré, Dr. Josef Goebbels, Luftwaffe General Milch, Bodenschatz, Reichsminister Dr. Frick, Staatssekretär Funk, Reichsleiter Bouhler, Dr. Robert Ley, Reichsbankpräsident Dr. Schacht, Reichsminister Dr.Ing. e.h. Dorpmüller, SA Staff Chief Lutze, NSKK Korpsführer Hühnlein and others are simply shown in black.
The third item is an embossed 2-1/4 x 4-3/4 inch eagle and swastika gold-bordered place card bearing the name Frau Ohnesorge.
Those were the heady prewar days of enormous German prestige throughout Europe when such events called for the most splendid uniforms, sword, daggers and other trappings for the men and the finest gowns for the ladies.
Seated in closest proximity to Hitler were Hermann Göring and his wife Emmy, American Ambassador Dodd and his wife, Italian Ambassador Attolico and his wife, French Ambassador Francois-Poncet and his wife, British Ambassador Phipps and his wife, and the Soviet, Japanese and Turkish Ambassadors.
Naturally, invitations such as this were printed only in the small quantity needed for distribution to each guest. A few were saved by participants as souvenirs of an extremely memorable event in the closest proximity to German Chancellor and Nazi Führer Adolf Hitler, but the great bulk of them were discarded or destroyed, and thus any example found today must be considered very rare. Complete and in very good condition.
