We do not know the first thing about Nazi toys, or their components and we have been unable to find anything definitive about these two figures on the internet or in books that we have consulted. What we do know is that they are real Third Reich material and that they were brought home to America after World War II by a GI who put them in a box with other Nazi medals, belt buckles and souvenirs. That is how we obtained them - from the widow of the man who brought them home. We bought the material as a lot.

From what we have learned we believe the seated SS man figures were made the way they are with a wire about 10 mm long coming out of the seat of the pants, so that they would stay put on the seat in the toy vehicle, like the TIPP & CO. Führerwagen, they came with. We don't think they were ever intended for sale separately and that's why we can't find them individually in any online catalog.

Since we don't know much about these things, we have tried to show the two hand-painted figures from every possible angle. That will let you know as much about them as we know, including the measurements and the differences between them. While the two figures are nearly identical, the larger one is about 1/4 inch longer from top to bottom than the smaller one.

If the figures were indeed made by Lineol or Elastolin then they are made from a combination of clay, sawdust and glue on a wire armature. The factories employed painters or sent the pieces out to be painted in homes as part of a cottage industry. The paint jobs are not great in terms of detail, but they are apparently very typical of the detail found on these kinds of figures. The boots and belts are the same color as the rest of the outfits but are shinier.

We think these SS men were probably available with a toy like the Tipp Führerwagen shown in the Third Reich era ad shown above, and on the right in the hands of young members of the Hitlerjugend.

The wire coming out of the seat of the pants of the smaller figure is rusty while the wire coming out of the seat of the pants of the larger figure is not rusty but has a few light corrosion spots on it. The paint on the figures is in excellent condition and we suspect they may never have been played with at all.
