HITLER, HIMMLER, LSSAH, Sepp Dietrich
Hitler in Poland 1939
Auf den Strassen des Sieges Erlebnisse mit dem Führer in Polen, Reichspressechef Otto Dietrich
Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goering
This is a very nice First Edition hardcover example of Auf den Strassen des Sieges (On The Victorious Road), subtitled “Experiences with the Führer in Poland” and published in 1939 by the Zentralverlag der NSDAP, Franz Eher Nachfolger GmbH München (Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party) in Munich. It was was once part of the library of NSDAP Ortsgruppe Nürnberg-St. Johannis.
Hitler Frontfahrt September 1939
It was written by Nazi Reichspressechef and high-ranking SS Officer, Otto Dietrich and his associates at the Führerhauptquartier, Nazi journalist Helmut Sündermann, Wilfrid Bade (author of Die SA erobert Berlin), SS-Standartenführer Gunther d’ Alquen (Chief Editor of the SS newspaper Das Schwarze Korps and commander of SS-Standarte Kurt Eggers) and Heinz Lorenz (Hitler’s Deputy Chief Press Secretary during World War II and Deputy Press Attaché in the Führerbunker towards the end of the war).

The images inside the front and back hardcover have maps of Poland showing the detailed route of Hitler’s travels to frontline positions in Poland by airplane and car in September 1939 (shown below. The text is about the stealthy and successful invasion of Poland by National Socialist Germany, and Hitler’s keen interest in the war.
After staying in the Reichschancellery in Berlin during the first day of the war, the Führer und Feldherr could not take it any longer and wanted to see what was happening close-up. A military headquarter was set-up in Poland, staffed by a small group of people Hitler was familiar with. History was made from this tightly run, high-tempo, modern military headquarters from which Hitler made his trips to the frontlines. It was anything but common for the leader of any nation at that time to travel anywhere near a war zone, but Hitler was completely at ease with it.

SS Officer Hitler’s escort command, LSSAH, Nazi machine gun
The photos were taken by members of Hitler’s entourage during his trips to the front: SA-Obergruppenführer Brückner, SS-Gruppenführer Schaub, SS-Obersturmbannführer Dr. Brandt, SS-Obersturmführer Wünsche and SS-Obersturmführer Darges. They are not easily found in other Third Reich or World War II books.

The last chapter is called “Facts vs. Lies” with a chronological, date-by-date overview of the first 18 days of the invasion in which Ministerialrat Werner Stephan of the Nazi Press Department offers to counter “foreign lies” and anti-German propaganda about the historic September Feldzug in Polen.

Hitler eating at a Wehrmacht field kitchen
Auf den Strassen des Sieges tells the story of these Frontfahrten and the chapters are accompanied by black & white photos printed on glossy paper. They show Hitler in front of his train (the Amerika) with Nazi Press Chief Dietrich, with generals and soldiers at the front, eating in a field kitchen, meeting ethnic Germans while en route, men at work inside the Führerhauptquartier, Nazi tanks in action, Hitler’s large airplane after its landing on a grassy field (not an airport, no runway, just grass), Hitler reviewing captured Polish artillery, Polish POWs, and even an SS Officer with a heavy machine gun; a member of Hitler’s escort command. Another rare photo shows Hitler with Heinrich Himmler and Sepp Dietrich along with “his Leibstandarte”.

St. Johannis is a section of downtown Nürnberg, the City of Nazi Party Days in Julius Streicher’s Gau Franken. It has the library inventory number G. 335 written on a label on the spine of the dust jacket and on the title page.
Any prospective purchaser might be interested to know that we acquired this book in a grouping of a dozen or so rare Third Reich publications that were ‘liberated’ shortly after the end of World War II by an American Army Captain working in an office that had been occupied during the Third Reich by staff of Ortsgruppe Nürnberg-St. Johannis.
